Florence and the Renaissance current

FlorenceFlorence is often defined as the cradle of Renaissance: the town is characterized in every street and building by that extraordinary literary, artistic and scientific development which took place between the 14th and the 16th century. Among the facts preceding this period of splendour we find the crisis of the Catholic Church (expecially the controversy about the Papacy in Avignon, France, and the Western Schism) and the disastrous effects of the Black Death, all of which led to a critical re-examination of the Middle Age’s values, producing as a result a re-valuation of the classic antiquity’s ones. Florence took profit of this great social change in every aspect (material and spiritual), and it became one of the catalyzing places of that thought current, becoming in that period one of the most important centres of the world culture’s re-birth.
